SHELLY V. FLAIS
Dr. Shelly Vaziri Flais, born and raised in the Chicago area, received both her undergraduate and medical degrees from Northwestern University within Northwestern’s Honors Program in Medical Education, graduating from medical school in 1999. Dr. Flais then performed her residency training in pediatrics at Children's Memorial (now Lurie Children’s) Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Flais joined Pediatric Health Associates in 2011.
Dr. Flais is an American Academy of Pediatrics national spokesperson and an author of several AAP parenting books. Her latest publication is Nurturing Boys to be Better Men; Gender Equality Starts at Home, published in 2023. She authored the AAP’s award-winning Raising Twins for which a 3rd edition was released in 2019. She is the editor-in-chief of the AAP’s Caring For Your School-Age Child: Ages 5-12 Years. She served as coeditor of the AAP's The Big Book of Symptoms, as well as a contributor for Sleep: What Every Parent Needs to Know.
Dr. Flais, an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, is also the co-chair of Northwestern’s Women In Medicine committee of the Medical Alumni Association Board. She is a 2019 recipient of the John X. Thomas, Jr. Best Teachers of Feinberg Award, as well as the 2016 Distinguished Pediatric Academic Contributed Service Award from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. In 2018, Dr. Flais joined Northwestern’s FAME: The Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators.
After a family member’s cancer diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Flais is passionate about giving back to the childhood cancer community. In 2021 her family led a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Students of the Year fundraising team to raise funds for, and awareness of, blood cancer research. After this rewarding experience, she accepted a role as co-chair of the LLS Chicago region Students of the Year Leadership Team for the 2021-2022 year.
She is bilingual in Spanish and has particular interests in multiple births and food allergies. Dr. Flais is a mom to 4 young adults, including twins, who have been her greatest teachers. She loves to cook and learn about food, and taking long trail walks outdoors.
